Short-form video glossary
The vocabulary of short-form video, defined in plain words. Every entry explains what the term means, why it matters to your views or your payout, and the Crayo tool that handles it.
Formats
7 termsBrainrot
Brainrot is internet slang for low effort, high stimulation online content and for the mental fog that comes from consuming it. As a video genre, it describes fast, looping, heavily stimulating short form clips made for endless scrolling.
Reddit story video
A Reddit story video is a short vertical clip that narrates a post from a Reddit thread, usually with a synthetic voice, burned in captions, and unrelated background footage playing underneath to hold attention.
Fake text story video
A fake text story video is a short vertical clip that tells a story through a simulated messaging conversation, with bubbles appearing one at a time, notification sounds, and often a synthetic voice reading each message aloud.
Split-screen video
A split-screen video shows two separate clips in one frame at the same time. In short form it usually means a vertical stack: the main content on top and a second looping video underneath to hold idle attention.
POV video
POV stands for point of view. In film it means footage shot as if through a character's eyes. On short form platforms it usually means a caption that puts the viewer inside a scenario, whether or not the camera is first person.
Satisfying video
A satisfying video is a short clip built around repetitive motion that resolves cleanly, such as slicing, pressing, sorting, or pouring. The appeal comes from watching a process complete rather than from any story or dialogue.
Slideshow post
A slideshow post is a set of still images published as one swipeable unit, usually with text on each frame and a music bed. TikTok calls its version photo mode, and Instagram calls the equivalent a carousel.
Platforms and algorithms
6 termsFor You Page
The For You Page, often shortened to FYP, is TikTok's main recommendation feed. It shows videos chosen by the ranking system for each individual viewer rather than posts from accounts that viewer follows.
Algorithm
The algorithm is creator shorthand for the ranking and recommendation systems a platform uses to decide which videos to show which viewers. It is not one program but several, covering candidate selection, ranking, and moderation.
Shadowban
A shadowban is the creator term for a quiet reduction in a post or account's distribution, applied without a notification or a visible strike. Platforms do not use the word, though several confirm they limit reach for content that breaks guidelines.
9:16 aspect ratio
9:16 is the vertical aspect ratio used by TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts, meaning the frame is nine units wide for every sixteen tall. The common export size is 1080 by 1920 pixels.
Safe zones
Safe zones are the regions of a video frame where important content stays visible because no platform interface covers it. In vertical feeds the buttons, captions, and profile elements sit along the bottom and right edges.
Trending sounds
Trending sounds are audio clips, songs, or voice snippets being attached to a rising number of new posts on a platform. Using one groups a video with others on the same sound page and signals the topic it belongs to.
Monetization
7 termsCPM
CPM stands for cost per mille, the amount an advertiser pays for one thousand ad impressions. Mille is Latin for thousand. It is an advertiser side price, measured before the platform takes its share of the revenue.
RPM
RPM stands for revenue per mille, the amount a creator actually earns for every thousand views after the platform takes its share. It counts total views, including those that never showed an ad.
Watch time
Watch time is the total amount of time viewers spend watching a channel's videos, reported in hours or minutes. It is a cumulative total across views, not an average, and it drives both recommendations and monetization eligibility.
Average view duration
Average view duration is the mean amount of time viewers spend watching a single video, calculated as total watch time divided by the number of views. YouTube Studio reports it in minutes and seconds alongside average percentage viewed.
YouTube Partner Program
The YouTube Partner Program, usually shortened to YPP, is the framework that lets creators earn money on YouTube through ad revenue share, memberships, and other features. It has two tiers with separate eligibility thresholds.
TikTok Creator Rewards Program
The TikTok Creator Rewards Program is TikTok's monetization scheme that pays creators for qualified views on original videos longer than one minute. It replaced the earlier Creator Fund, which paid far less per view.
Clipping campaign
A clipping campaign is an arrangement where a brand, creator, or agency pays people to cut and post clips of their content, with payment based on verified views rather than a flat fee per post.
Editing
6 termsJump cut
A jump cut is an edit that removes a section of time from within a single continuous shot, so the subject appears to jump forward. The camera position barely changes, which makes the cut visible rather than invisible.
Pattern interrupt
A pattern interrupt is a deliberate break in an established rhythm that resets attention. In video editing it means changing something visible or audible, such as the shot, sound, or caption style, before a viewer disengages.
Hook
A hook is the opening of a video that stops a scroll and gives a viewer a reason to keep watching. It combines the first spoken line, the first frame, and any opening caption into a single promise.
B-roll
B-roll is supplementary footage cut over or between the main shots of a video. It illustrates what is being said, covers edits in the primary footage, and gives the eye something to do during longer stretches of speech.
Subtitle burn-in
Subtitle burn-in means rendering captions permanently into the video frames so they are part of the image. Unlike closed captions, burned in subtitles cannot be turned off, translated, or read by a screen reader.
Green screen effect
The green screen effect places a subject over a replaced background. Traditionally this uses chroma key, which removes a solid coloured backdrop, while app effects and AI tools separate the subject without any physical screen.
AI video
7 termsAI clipping
AI clipping is the automatic conversion of a long video into short vertical clips. Software transcribes the audio, scores segments for standalone interest, then cuts, reframes, and captions the selected moments without manual editing.
AI voiceover
An AI voiceover is spoken narration generated from written text by a speech synthesis model rather than recorded by a person. Modern systems produce natural pacing, emphasis, and breathing, and can clone a specific voice from a short sample.
Text to speech
Text to speech, abbreviated TTS, is technology that converts written text into spoken audio. It covers everything from accessibility screen readers and navigation prompts to the neural voice models creators use for video narration.
Auto captions
Auto captions are subtitles generated automatically from a video's audio by speech recognition. The system transcribes speech, timestamps each word or phrase, and outputs text that can be displayed as a track or burned into the frames.
Background removal
Background removal is the separation of a subject from everything behind it in an image or video. AI based tools do this by predicting a per pixel mask, so no green screen or manual masking is required.
Voice changer
A voice changer transforms recorded speech so it sounds like a different voice. Simple versions shift pitch and formants in real time, while AI voice conversion re synthesises the audio in a target voice while keeping the original delivery.
Speech enhancement
Speech enhancement is the processing of recorded audio to make spoken words clearer, by reducing background noise, room reverb, hum, and clipping while preserving the voice. Modern tools use models trained to separate speech from everything else.
Creator business
6 termsFaceless YouTube channel
A faceless YouTube channel publishes videos without showing the creator on camera. Content is built from narration, stock or generated footage, screen recordings, and graphics, so the channel identity rests on topic and voice rather than a personality.
YouTube automation
YouTube automation is running a channel where most production work is outsourced to freelancers or handled by software, so the owner manages the process rather than making videos. Channels are usually faceless and built around repeatable formats.
UGC
UGC stands for user generated content: media created by users rather than by a brand. In creator marketing the term also names a paid service where a creator produces authentic looking content for a brand to run as advertising.
Content repurposing
Content repurposing is reworking one piece of content into multiple formats or posts, such as cutting a podcast into short clips, turning a video into a carousel, or expanding a thread into a script.
Clipper
A clipper is someone who cuts short clips from another person's long form content, such as a stream, podcast, or video, and posts them to short form platforms, usually for campaign payouts or ad revenue rather than as their own original content.
Engagement rate
Engagement rate is the share of an audience that interacts with a post, calculated by dividing interactions such as likes, comments, shares, and saves by a base figure, usually followers or reach, then multiplying by one hundred.
