9:16 aspect ratio

The ratio comes from how phones are held. Turning the standard 16:9 broadcast frame on its side fills a phone screen edge to edge, so vertical feeds standardised on it. Most platforms accept other ratios and letterbox them, but a full bleed 9:16 frame is what displays without bars in a scrolling feed.

For creators the practical issue is that most source footage is horizontal. Webcams, cameras, screen recordings, and podcast setups all produce 16:9, so getting to vertical means cropping, scaling, or stacking rather than exporting. Every choice loses something: a centre crop cuts two thirds of the width, and scaling to fit leaves empty bands.

One thing worth separating is ratio from duration. A vertical frame does not make a clip a Short or a Reel by itself, and platforms apply their own length rules independently: Shorts allow up to three minutes as of 2026, while Reels run far longer technically but perform best well under that. Ratio governs display, not eligibility.

In a workflow, converting to 9:16 usually happens before captions are added, so text can be positioned against the final frame rather than moved later. A converter that shows the vertical crop live avoids the common round trip of exporting, checking on a phone, and re cropping because a head or a caption sits outside the frame.
