Shadowban

The concept predates short form video and comes from forum moderation, where a user's posts stayed visible to them but to nobody else. On video platforms the modern equivalent is ineligibility for recommendation: the post still exists on your profile and still reaches followers, but the recommendation feed stops distributing it.

It matters because the failure mode is silent. A creator sees views collapse with no warning and no appeal path, and guesses at a cause. TikTok has never used the term officially and publishes no checker, no duration, and no status page for it, so any tool promising a shadowban score is inferring rather than reporting.

Real causes tend to be mundane: content that touches restricted topics, borrowed or reuploaded footage, watermarks from another platform, repetitive posting of near identical clips, spammy comment or follow behaviour, or a first video in a new account pattern that trips automated review. Sudden low views on one post is usually variance, not enforcement.

The practical response is to check the account status page for actual violations, delete nothing in a panic, stop bulk follow and comment activity, publish fresh original clips for a week, and remove other platforms' watermarks and burned in subtitles before reposting a video elsewhere. Compare the results against the previous month rather than against one post.
