Japanese captions in short

Crayo transcribes Japanese speech and adds animated captions to short clips from podcasts, streams and interviews. It is for Japanese creators, VTuber and streamer clippers, and podcasters who post captioned vertical clips to YouTube Shorts, TikTok and Instagram Reels.

Japan has one of the most developed clipping cultures anywhere: streamer and VTuber clip channels are an established genre on YouTube, and Japanese TikTok and Shorts audiences are used to heavy on-screen text. Japanese podcasts and radio-style talk shows add long-form material, and burned-in captions are an expected part of Japanese video rather than an extra.

Japanese is written with a mix of kanji, hiragana and katakana and no spaces between words, so line breaks have to fall at natural phrase boundaries, and a caption of ten characters can carry a full sentence. Transcription chooses kanji based on context, so homophones and names are the lines to check in the caption list. Crayo transcribes the speech as Japanese when selected.

A practical tip: keep Japanese captions short, around six to twelve characters per caption, and large, since characters need more size than Latin letters to read on a phone. Preview the style on the clip before export because the fonts differ between the 32 styles and characters need a clean, heavy weight to stay legible.
