Chinese captions in short

Crayo transcribes Chinese speech and adds animated captions to short clips cut from podcasts, streams and interviews. It is for Mandarin-speaking creators and clippers reaching audiences in Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and the global diaspora on YouTube Shorts, Instagram and TikTok.

Chinese-language short-form content outside mainland China is concentrated on YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels and TikTok, with Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and overseas communities as the main audiences. Mandarin podcasts and interview channels have exploded in the last few years, and burned-in captions are a long-standing norm in Chinese video, so viewers expect them on every clip.

Chinese is written in characters without spaces between words, so line breaking has to happen at phrase boundaries rather than at spaces, and a character carries more meaning than a Latin letter, which means captions should hold fewer characters than an English caption holds letters. Transcription returns characters; whether they are simplified or traditional depends on the model output, so Taiwanese creators should check the caption list and edit lines that need traditional forms.

A practical tip: Mandarin speakers vary a lot in pace, and tone-heavy speech is hard to follow muted, so choose a caption style that highlights the current phrase and keep the characters large. Preview the style on the clip before exporting, because the fonts differ between styles and characters need a clean, heavy weight to read on a phone.
